September 23 is the International Day of Sign Languages, designated by the United Nations. Sign languages convey information visually through hand movements and other features rather than voice, and there are many of them. According to the UN, more than 300 sign languages are used around the world. You cannot necessarily communicate in the same sign language in every country.
Sign languages are not simply spoken words replaced one by one with hand shapes. Each has its own linguistic structure and is used to converse, learn and express ideas. Sign languages need to be learned as languages distinct from spoken ones.
There is also International Sign, used at international gatherings and elsewhere. But that does not mean it is a single universal language replacing local sign languages. The international day highlights the importance of being able to learn and receive necessary services in sign language. Differences between languages are not only differences in sounds we hear.
