People living aboard a space station need the carbon dioxide from their breath removed from the cabin. Technology used for that purpose has also been used to grow vegetables on Earth. In late August, JAXA introduced a demonstration at the Tsukuba Space Center that recovered carbon dioxide from exhaust gas and used it to grow plants.
The boiler supplying heat to the center runs on city gas. In the demonstration, its exhaust passed through equipment that collected carbon dioxide. Inside is a material with many small pores that adsorbs gases. Because the material also readily takes up moisture, the system removes moisture first and then collects carbon dioxide.
The recovered carbon dioxide went to the adjacent plant-growing facility. It was supplied to crops including leaf lettuce, spinach and strawberry seedlings. Plants use carbon dioxide for photosynthesis. Something to remove from a spacecraft cabin becomes something plants need to grow. The process connects the recovery equipment with a use for what it collects.
This is not a story about taking vegetables into space. It is an effort to apply space technology to equipment on Earth. Nor is it an announcement that all exhaust gas can now be eliminated. In this demonstration, the destination for the recovered gas was a plant-growing facility at the same center.
