At a sento you are visiting for the first time, some people move ahead assuming the shoe locker number and the changing-room locker number are the same. In some bathhouses, that is true. But in many others, you hand over the shoe-locker key at reception and receive a locker key or wristband with a different number. If you walk on holding only the number you remembered at the entrance, it becomes easy to pause in the changing room.
What matters here is not simply remembering the shoe-locker number but checking what came back into your hand after reception. It may be a key with a wooden tag, a wristband, or a paper slip, and that changes what you should look for next. If the bathhouse uses the same number all the way through, it stays simple. But if the number switches, the digits on the item returned by the staff become the real guide for what comes next. Sometimes there is also a small notice beside the counter, so the few seconds right after receiving the item matter the most.
If you cannot find the number in the changing room, it is usually faster to look again at the key or band in your hand than to keep wandering around. At a sento, people often want to hurry into the bath, but checking one thing at the entrance makes the rest of the flow much quieter. Even if you think you remember the shoe-locker number, first make sure a different number did not come back to you after reception.
