A trial of a moving waste bin is planned at Shinjuku Station in Tokyo. A small robot carrying a bin will travel through an underground passage inside the ticket gates. It is scheduled for weekdays from September 8 to November 20, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It may be changed or canceled depending on conditions.

Passengers can put rubbish in the bin when the robot comes near. It follows a set area and uses sensors to check people and objects around it as it moves. Ordinary station bins will remain available during the trial.

At a station, a bin can be far away or hard to locate. Yet even a bin that comes to you is a problem if it makes walking harder for people in a hurry. During the trial, the robot's trips through the passage will be filmed. The company says this footage will be used only to analyze the trial.
