An experiment has begun connecting data collected from space to supermarket cabbage displays. On August 24, JAXA, Dentsu and JA Tsumagoi announced an initiative to change advertising and displays in line with predicted cabbage shipments and prices. It is to be tried gradually at about 50 stores in the Tokyo metropolitan and Kansai regions.
Even when cabbages grow well, shipments exceeding sales can lead to lower prices or discarded surplus vegetables. If advertising dates are already fixed, telling shoppers about conditions in the fields is not easy. The project combines satellite data with field surveys and market information to predict shipments. Clouds obscuring the fields and preventing collection of necessary data have also been a challenge.
When shipments are expected to rise, the project increases cabbage recipe suggestions and advertising for seasonings used with them. When shipments are expected to fall, it adjusts the timing and scale of advertising. Rather than simply cutting prices, displays also give shoppers ideas for meals.
This is still an experiment, so changes in food waste and farmers' incomes remain to be investigated. Satellites do not determine vegetable prices by themselves. How can predictions from fields be linked to distribution and sales schedules? This experiment examines how people and stores act after the data has been collected.
